Bluegill and crappie fishing on the area lakes was good and will only get better with the warm weather. On sunny days, fish will move into shallow, dark- bottomed bays and channels in search of warmer water and food. The north end of lakes generally warm fastest, so concentrate on these areas first. Otherwise, look for them suspended off of the first drop-off outside these areas.

Bluegill fishing was good on many area lakes. Nagawicka, Little Muskego, Lower Nemahbin, Lower Nashotah, Monona, and Waubesa have all produced fish. Use a redworm, spike, or waxworm on a small hook or ice fishing jig for the best action. Small plastic tails or black ant flies have also worked well.

Anglers have done well crappie fishing on Okauchee, Lower Nemahbin, Lac La Belle, Big Cedar, Nagawicka, Lower Nashotah, Delavan, Keesus, Waubesa, and Pine lakes. A small fathead, rosie red, or waxworm baited on a #8 hook or a small jig will work best. A jig and twister combo, Nail Tail, tube jig, Mini Mite, Dick Smith’s Panfish Grub or a small spinner will work as well.

Walleye fishing on the Rock and Fox rivers has slowed a bit. Some of the fish in the Rock River were finished spawning while others have yet to spawn. Some large female fish were still in the river. After the spawn look for these fish to start feeding and to start moving back down river to the lake. Jumbo fatheads, large rosie red, and large lake shiners continue to be the best baits. Fish them on ¼ or 3/8 ounce jigs or Lindy rigs. Shortly after the walleyes finish spawning the whitebass will move upriver to spawn. These fish can be caught using large fatheads tipped on a 1/16-ounce jig. Also try small spinners, spoons, or jig and twister combos. Catfish were also biting on the Rock River. Nightcrawlers, stink bait, and cutbait are working best.

Anglers fishing on the Wisconsin and Wolf Rivers were still doing well. Many of the fish were still small, however, some larger fish have been caught from the Nekoosa area. Chartreuse and green jigs tipped with a jumbo fathead or a large lake shiner will work best.
