Fishing Report

The Wisconsin game fishing season is open through Sunday, March 5 2006. That means there is still one more weekend to catch that big northern pike or walleye.

Fishing has been decent over the past week. Anglers are catching bluegills from Monona Bay and Lake Waubesa in Madison, as well as Upper Genesee, Silver, Golden, and Rock Lakes. Use small jigs such as Marmooskas, small Ratfinkees, and 1/100th ounce ball jigs. These jigs are best baited with a spike, wiggler, waxworm, or mousie. Many anglers have also been successful using plastics. Use a locator to find the depth that the fish are holding at.

Crappies have been caught from Lower Nashotah, North, and Silver Lakes, along with the Kettle. Small minnows, wigglers, spikes, or plastics are the best choices for crappies. Many anglers have reported finding crappies suspended as little as two feet under the ice. A locator will save a lot of time in finding the correct depth.

This is one of the best times of year to catch big northern pike. These fish are starting to move shallow towards their spawning areas. It is important however, to release these fish so that we will be able to continue to enjoy catching these big fish. Large bait is the best bet this time of year. Jumbo smelt rigged on a flagel rig or quick strike rig is a good choice. Medium suckers or jumbo shiners also work well this time of year. Good lakes to try for pike are Nagawicka, the Launch Bay on Pine, Lower Nashotah, Rock, Lower Genesee, Little Muskego, Lower Phantom, School Section, and Okauchee Lakes.

Walleye fishing has been difficult this year. Some fish have been caught from Pewaukee, Nagawicka, Fox, and North Lakes. Target these fish with tip-ups rigged with light leaders. Bait the tip-ups with jumbo fatheads, small or medium golden shiners, or large lake shiners. Walleyes will often spend the daylight hours in deep water, so the best fishing is usually at night, sometimes late at night. Some anglers save reported their best fishing being from 10pm-1am.
