An Afternoon with Lago

On a beautiful June afternoon I had the pleasure of taking my son fishing with Big Muskego Guide and WFC member Jim Laganowski of Jim’s Early Bird Guide Service. We met at the Boxhorn launch at around 5PM and headed out for the afternoon/evening bite.

With the winds shifting around to the East Jim was unsure of the impact the coming cold front would have on fishing. We started casting spinner baits for Pike and Bass. While landing several smaller fish Jim explained that the larger fish would be caught in the next month or two as the water warmed up and equalized throughout the lake. The afternoon breeze was filled with the sounds of yellow headed blackbirds cackling like a pheasant and the sight of freshwater pelicans and cranes concealed in the tall vegitation. After casting for an hour or so we were adjacent to one of Jim’s favorite spring panfish spots.

We switched over to mini jigs and my son Josh choose the ‘Jig-A-Whopper’ mini split tail in white with a red tail…good choice as it would turn out. While Jim and I toyed with the light biting ‘gills Josh caught one after the other. Amazing how profound the difference the color of his micro jig had one these fish. He did not need to tip the lure with a grub or spike….it would hit the water and within 2 or 3 seconds the ‘gills would nail it. Jim and I caught a few but most were softly nibbling at our baits and there were many missed hooked sets. Not Josh, he pulled out more than 20 gills in the 7-8” range in less than ½ hr. Beautiful thick panfish that made your mouth water, but we would return all of these spring spawners today to allow them a chance to proliferate. Most were close but slightly under the 8” legal size restriction on Big Muskego, but Josh had fun pulling these in and Jim and I enjoyed his enthusiasm.

Back to spinners and topwater lures as the sun moved down on the horizon, fishing action was not great with many short hits and surface swats but not as many hook-ups. The knowledge and experience Jim has on this body of water was impressive and Josh and I enjoyed his company as we cast and watched the sun set on a nearly perfect week day afternoon of fishing.
